By Dakshin CuisineUpdated
Is South Indian food spicy? Some of it is, and much of it isn't. South Indian cooking gets its heat from chilies and black pepper, then balances it with coconut, yogurt, tamarind, and rice. That means you can build a meal at Dakshin that's gentle and comforting, boldly fiery, or a little of both. Here's how to find your perfect level.
At a glance
- Gentle: Idli Sambar, Masala Dosa, Butter Chicken, our kormas, and Meen Moilee Halibut
- In between: Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Roganjosh, Punjabi Chole, and our biryanis
- Bold: our Chettinad dishes, the Mysore Masala Dosa, Chilli Chicken, and our vindaloos
- To cool down: Cucumber Raita and a Mango Lassi
Where does the heat come from?
Most of the heat in South Indian cooking comes from dried and fresh chilies and from black pepper, which grows along Kerala's Malabar Coast and gives Chettinad cooking its famous kick. Many other spices bring aroma rather than fire: curry leaves, mustard seeds, cumin, fenugreek, and cardamom add fragrance and depth without much heat. Tamarind and Malabar tamarind add tang, while coconut milk, yogurt, cream, and cashews soften and round out a sauce.
Gentle dishes for milder palates
If you prefer gentle flavors, or you're new to South Indian food, start here:
- Idli Sambar: Soft steamed rice and lentil cakes with sambar and chutneys.
- Masala Dosa and Cheese Dosa: Crisp dosas filled with spiced potatoes or melted mozzarella.
- Butter Chicken and Paneer Makhani: Boneless chicken or our homemade paneer in a tomato gravy.
- Chicken, Lamb, and Vegetable Korma: Rich curries made with cashews.
- Meen Moilee Halibut: Halibut simmered in coconut milk with turmeric and curry leaves.
- Chicken Cheese Kebab: Chicken breast from the tandoor with cream cheese and fenugreek.

Warmly spiced favorites in between
Many of our curries, biryanis, and tandoor dishes sit comfortably in the middle: richly spiced and aromatic rather than fiery. Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Roganjosh, Punjabi Chole, Tandoori Chicken Tikka, and our biryanis are good places to start. Heat varies from dish to dish, so if you're unsure, just ask your server.
Bold dishes for heat lovers
If you love heat, these are for you:
- Chicken Chettinad, Vegetable Chettinad, and Chicken Chettinad Dosa: Roasted coconut and black peppercorns in the fiery Chettinad style of Tamil Nadu.
- Mysore Masala Dosa: Our classic dosa with an extra layer of spice from Mysore masala.
- Chilli Chicken and Chili Chicken Dosa: Boneless chicken tossed in chili sauce.
- Chicken, Lamb, and Shrimp Vindaloo: Vindaloo comes from Goa and is traditionally one of the spiciest curries on an Indian menu.
- Kerala Fish Curry: Our chef's special, with kingfish, chilies, turmeric, and Malabar tamarind.
How to cool things down
A spoonful of Cucumber Raita, made with yogurt, cucumber, tomato, and roasted cumin, is the classic way to tame a spicy bite. A creamy Mango Lassi does the same job in a glass. Our sweet Mango Chutney, coconut chutney, naan, and Biryani Rice all help balance the heat, too.

Ordering for a table with different tastes
Sharing is the easiest way to please everyone. Pair a gentle curry with a bold one, add a dosa and some bread or rice, and let everyone find a favorite. Tell your server how much heat you enjoy, and they'll point you to dishes that match. And if your server tells you a dish is spicy, trust them!
Whatever your spice level, we'd love to cook for you. Reserve a table or order online, and if you're new to South Indian food, start with our guide to dosas.
Frequently asked questions
What are the mildest dishes at Dakshin?
For gentle flavors, try Idli Sambar, a Masala Dosa or Cheese Dosa, Butter Chicken, Paneer Makhani, one of our kormas, or Meen Moilee Halibut. Tell your server you prefer mild food, and they'll help you choose.
What are the spiciest dishes at Dakshin?
Our boldest flavors include the Chettinad dishes, the Mysore Masala Dosa, Chilli Chicken, the Chili Chicken Dosa, and our chicken, lamb, and shrimp vindaloos. Ask your server how each one is tasting today.
Is Chettinad food spicy?
Yes. Chettinad cooking, from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, is known for bold, peppery spice. Our Chicken Chettinad, Vegetable Chettinad, and Chicken Chettinad Dosa are made with roasted coconut and black peppercorns.
Is South Indian food spicier than North Indian food?
Not necessarily. Both have gentle and fiery dishes. South Indian cooking leans on black pepper, chilies, and tamarind, while many North Indian dishes use cream, butter, and yogurt to soften the spice. Our menu has gentle and bold dishes alike, so there's something for every palate.
What should I drink with spicy food?
A Mango Lassi is our favorite, since cool yogurt and mango soothe the palate. A Virgin Mojito or a Passion Fruit Delight is refreshing, too.
